CLOSE UP: Janet Murphy – Rural Life

© Janet Murphy

Janet Murphy is a UK based landscape and experimental photographer using both digital and analogue images to create her unique form of art photography . She was shortlisted in 2021 and in 2024 for the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain International Photography exhibition and has received several ‘honorable mentions’ and a ‘category winner’ in the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards for women photographers hosted by Fotonostrum Barcelona. Janet also received an RPS Creative Eye selectors award in 2023. Born in Cornwall and having lived in the south west of the UK all her life she is now based in Somerset UK.

My series ‘Rural Life’ came together after I purchased a vintage 35mm camera and started shooting analogue images near my home in Somerset. I am lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of the UK with a varied landscape. The Somerset levels, a conservation area, the Mendip Hills and the Quantock Hills all feature in this series in which I portray my love of the countryside.

Taken in deep winter 2023/24, all the images use 35mm black and white film, and are some of the first analogue images I have taken for many years. The beautiful quality of film and the natural grain really bring out the winter mood and the conditions of the saturated land during this time. The rural landscape is constantly changing.

I hope to extend my reach further afield in the South West UK and explore other rural areas around Dartmoor in Devon and Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. The landscape is changing and farming is in decline, although there are some interesting projects in the South West involving regenerative farming, rewilding and the re-introduction of Beavers on Exmoor to aid flood defences and biodiversity. I want to document as much as I can and hopefully reach out to others on this journey.
